Hamburg/ Berlin, January 27, 2025

The Parliamentary Circle of Friends for the Reconstruction of the Bornplatz Synagogue was founded in Berlin.

The Bornplatz Synagogue Foundation and seven members of the Bundestag had invited to the Parliamentary Society for this - on the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the former Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp.

The Hamburg members of the German Bundestag Christoph de Vries, Falko Drossmann, Franziska Hoppermann, Metin Hakverdi, Aydan Özoguz, Ria Schröder and Katharina Beck completed the founding.

Following the upcoming federal election, further members from all over Germany are to be recruited in order to further strengthen the parliamentary roots of the project across party and parliamentary groups.

The reconstruction of the Bornplatz Synagogue is an important sign of the promotion of Jewish life in Germany and will clearly stand against emerging anti-Semitism and will actively bring people of different origins and beliefs together as a place of encounter. The church in Grindelviertel was robbed and destroyed by the National Socialists in 1938. One year later, the remains of the largest synagogue in northern Germany to date were demolished at the expense of the former Jewish community in Hamburg.

In 2020, the citizenry and the Senate had initially decided on the reconstruction. The federal government is also contributing to the costs.

An architectural competition is currently being announced. The results should be available later this year.
