History and future of the Bornplatz Synagogue 1906 and 2030

Accompany Hamburg expert Andreas Kowalski, certified by the Bornplatz Synagogue Foundation, on a guided tour from the Hohe Weide Synagogue to the Jewish Grindel Quarter with the former Bornplatz, the future location of the new Bornplatz Synagogue, which will be rebuilt in the next few years.
The experience
Hohe Weide Synagogue
Start your tour at the Hohe Weide Synagogue, a central place of Jewish life since 1960, where you will learn essential aspects of Judaism and admire Jewish treasures, such as a historic Hanukah chandelier and the magnificent crown of a Torah scroll from the destroyed Bornplatz Synagogue.

Historic foundation houses
You will then wander past the historic foundation houses and hear exciting stories about the revival of Jewish life after the Shoah.

Hamburger Kammerspiele Logensaal
This is followed by a visit to the box hall of the Hamburger Kammerspiele, the building that once housed a Jewish lodge and a Jewish household school. Hear exciting stories about the lives of Jewish residents of the Grindel Quarter.

Joseph Carlebach Educational House
You will then explore the Joseph Carlebach Educational House and the former Bornplatz and gain insights into the results of the excavations from 2023, which recovered treasures from the construction of what was once the largest synagogue in northern Germany. Here you can find out what the synagogue once looked like.
